DISCUSSION ITEMS:
Question Person(s) Responsible Notes and Next Steps
BSI Application -reflection questions Michael Crowder, English Professor & David Miramontes Quinones, VP of Student Services & Equity Background: BSI designation created under SB 134 (2024); recognizes institutions advancing Black student success for a 5-year period.

ARC meets eligibility (≥10% or 1,500 Black/African American students).

ARC opted out of Round 1 but pursued Round 2 (deadline Nov 22).

Process & Development

ARC qualifies for BSSI designation and applied in Round 2 after initial advisory discussions indicated more preparation was needed.

Monthly meetings with the President, VPI, and advisory group strengthened readiness and support structures.

Application was drafted with research support and is now with the President for review.

Process has promoted meaningful dialogue with Black staff/faculty, identified strengths and gaps, and improved institutional alignment.

SCC, CRC, and Sac State also applied; no designations have been issued yet.

If designated, next steps focus on five priority areas: space, funding, professional development, staffing, and enhanced student support, as well as partnerships (e.g., CSUS Black Honors College).

Team expressed strong collaboration, gratitude, and enthusiasm for future work supporting Black/African American student success.
