Board Goals Report - First Read This is a report the college is providing the Board of Trustees to document the work the college is doing to meet the Board’s goals. Frank Kobayashi - The committee has strategically invested over $100 million into Open Educational Resources (OERs) over the course of several decades.
- We've received several grants from the Chancellor's office specifically designated for OER initiatives.
- Further details will be discussed during the upcoming Student Success Council meeting.
- Any queries or questions regarding the report are welcome.
- In terms of charter and membership, our focus will be on English, Math, and ESL memberships.

DISCUSSION ITEMS:
Question Person(s) Responsible Notes and Next Steps
Considering that the Math Department is being combined with the CIS department, can the representative for Math now also be from CIS? Sharon Gott - We have three faculty members currently involved in CIS.
- Our membership structure is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to all.
- There are inquiries regarding the appropriateness of the current CIS structure as we transition into STEM-focused initiatives.
- CIS will maintain its autonomy, including budgeting responsibilities.
- Math will maintain its representation on SSC as-is
-Further discussions on the implementation of AB 1705 are forthcoming.
Jeffrey Moran is serving as the SLO Assessment Committee Chair, and the committee recently discussed information regarding SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) and ISLOs (Institutional Student Learning Outcomes) to share with to the Student Success Council. Jeffrey Moran - Jeff Moran, ESL Coordinator and Committee member, provided updates on the SLO Assessment Committee during the Student Success Council meeting. He introduced the Authentic Assessment Review Record (AARR), distributed annually each spring semester to faculty.
- Faculty members offer feedback on course Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) using a 5-point Likert scale and respond to open-ended questions.
- Yuj Shimizu, a Faculty Researcher, completed an analysis of the open-ended responses, identifying both benefits and challenges.
- The findings were shared with the Institutional Effectiveness Council (IEC), bridging the gap between SLOAC and IEC.
- The Spring 2024 AARR may focus on themes such as understanding available resources (benefit) and addressing issues with access, tools, and facilities (challenge).
- Action items include providing feedback to Jeff for ongoing committee discussions.
- The main takeaway highlights increased engagement between faculty and students, despite challenges like deficient thinking and shorter attention spans, with students gaining resilience from previous AARRs.
- Discussions also revolved around evolving student expectations and meeting their diverse needs.
- The ISLO Graduate Survey, administered to ARC graduates, assesses agreement on 35 Likert-scaled items related to student learning outcomes, with Yuj Shimizu comparing the 2023 survey to the 2019 survey.
- Qualitative comments from the survey revealed a shift in tone towards topics of social justice and equity.
