Native Nations Advisory Committee

Purpose

The committee’s goal shall be to strengthen the relationship between ARC and sovereign Native nations at the highest levels in order to increase access and academic success of Native American students in tandem with the maintenance of cultural traditions and wellbeing. In carrying out this vision, the committee shall perform the following functions:

a. Provide advice and counsel to strengthen the partnership between ARC and the land-based indigenous Native American tribes of the greater Sacramento region;

b. Provide input and collaboration in the development of programs and pathways for tribal citizens at ARC that meet the specific needs of tribal citizens and tribal communities.

c. Promote a campus climate conducive to meeting the cultural needs of the Native American community at ARC;

d. Review relevant reports and recommendations from the Los Rios Community College District that affect the educational experience of tribal citizens at ARC.

e. Inform the professional development needs of the faculty, staff, and administration relative to supporting tribal citizens at ARC.

f. Collaborate on the sovereignty frame, including, but not limited to, campus heritage displays, an elder in residence program, partnerships with K-12 Indian Education programs, dual enrollment programs with tribal schools, and the implementation of the campus disproportionate impact reports.

g. Establish such internal procedures and rules as may be most appropriate to assist it in achieving these goals, including appropriate policies and internal structures (such as subcommittees),

h. To ensure that the committee can fulfill its mission, ARC will provide staff and resources in an amount to be agreed upon.

i. The committee’s function shall solely be an advisory one. It shall have no power to mandate any action or expenditure by ARC.

j. The committee shall meet at least quarterly with the ELT.

k. The committee may add other representatives of other tribal governments.

l . The committee shall be comprised of the following members:

- The ARC Executive Leadership Team (ELT)

- The ARC Tribal Relations Officer

- The Director of the ARC Native American Resource Center

- Two American Indian students from ARC

- Those Tribal Chairpersons enumerated below, or their designees

- A representative from the Sacramento Native American Health Center

- Any other representative from organizations that directly serve the best interest of the local Native American student community.

Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians

Ione Band of Miwok Indians

United Auburn Indian Community
